The Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) will hold a national referendum as part of the ongoing Constitutional Review Process, according to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay Esq.
Speaking during the Universal Periodic Review in Geneva, Switzerland, the Attorney General said the Constitutional Review Process is aimed at modernising the country’s electoral system and strengthening the protection of human rights.
He further stated that the Criminal Procedure Act 2024, which came into effect in September 2025, represents one of the most comprehensive reforms in the country’s criminal justice system.
The Attorney General explained that the law places strong emphasis on due process while enhancing transparency and accountability within the justice sector.
According to Alpha Sesay Esq., the Act also introduces streamlined criminal procedures, including a requirement for magistrates to determine within 28 days whether cases should proceed to the High Court.
