Hope and healing returned to hundreds of families in Kambia District as the 16th Cataract Surgical Camp successfully restored sight to dozens of patients at the Kambia Government Hospital. Organized through a partnership between the hospital and the Northern Province Eye Care Project, the initiative has now restored vision to over 900 people since the eye unit was established in 2018.
This year’s camp, held from April 30 to May 3, 2026, restored sight to 79 eyes, attracting patients from all ten chiefdoms in Kambia District, neighboring Karene and Port Loko districts, and even from Guinea.
At the center of the initiative is Hassan Bangura, the District Eye Health Focal Person, whose dedication and commitment continue to transform lives despite numerous logistical and operational challenges. Many residents describe him as the driving force behind the success of the surgical camps.
Over the years the camps have benefited from the expertise of specialists including Morges Teshome, Lloyd Harrison Williams, the late Nvaimba Idrissa, Taylor, John Mattia and Gibril Sesay.
The eye care programme established by Christian Blind Mission and operated under the Ministry of Health’s National Eye Health Programme has become a beacon of hope for visually impaired people across the region.
Beyond restoring eyesight, the camp has restored dignity, independence, and renewed hope to hundreds who can now see life clearly again.
