A tragic incident has reportedly shaken residents along the Moa River in Kenema where six people were feared drowned while celebrating their friend’s birthday on Friday 15th May 2026
According to eyewitness accounts, the victims believed to be resident’s of Kpayama community in Kenema went to celebrate the birthday of the founder of their club(GF).
Local residents and fishermen immediately launched rescue efforts using canoes and fishing nets.
Survivors who managed to swim to safety were said to be in shock as community members gathered along the riverbank searching for them.
Community leaders described the incident as heartbreaking noting that the river remains a major transport route for many villages lacking proper bridges and safe transportation systems.
The disaster has cast a dark cloud over nearby communities with mourners expressing grief over the loss of productive young people and breadwinners.
The Moa River has long served as an important source of livelihood and transportation for communities in eastern Sierra Leone but during the rainy season it often becomes dangerous because of rising water levels and strong currents.
