Osman I. Kanu, who previously served as Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in the Law Officers’ Department, has been appointed as the new Solicitor General of the Republic of Sierra Leone by His Excellency President, (Rtd) Brigadier Julius Maada Bio.
The appointment was announced on Tuesday, 26th May 2026, following what many described as significant improvements in the operations of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution. During his tenure as (DPP), Mr. Kanu was known for strengthening and monitoring of court cases, promoting fast-track prosecutions, and ensuring that law officers effectively discharged their responsibilities.
Mr. Kanu is a seasoned British-trained lawyer who has served Sierra Leone for several years. His experience in law and administration has positively impacted many young lawyers and administrators across the country. He is well Known for his calm and professional approach, his humanitarian gestures have transcended regional and political lines.
As the newly appointed Solicitor General, many believe Mr. Kanu will continue the reforms and progress initiated by his predecessor while further enhancing effectiveness within the Law Officers’ Department.
His appointment is also expected to help improve public confidence and perceptions regarding the work of the Solicitor General’s office, building on the achievements recorded during his time as DPP..
