SALONE SECURITY SECTOR MAKES PROACTIVE MOVE
The Sierra Leone Security Sector has made a proactive move by beginning preliminary inquiries and interagency assessments to establish the facts surrounding a Comoros Islands’ registered vessel involving a cocaine seizure by Spanish police.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, 7th May 2026 by the Office of National Security (ONS), “The Security Sector has noted recent media reports about a cocaine seizure by Spanish police involving a vessel registered in the Comoros Islands, which reportedly departed Freetown on 22nd April 2029 before it was intercepted en route to the Mediterranean.
It furthered that the ‘Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority and the Sierra Leone Police have not received any official communication from the Spanish authorities regarding the incident, noting that the Security Sector has already begun preliminary inquiries and interagency assessments to establish the facts surrounding the vessel, its voyage history, and port movements.
“Investigations are ongoing , and the relevant authorities will undertake all necessary verification processes to determine the full circumstances of the matter,” the release states.
The Security Sector also assured the public and international partners that this matter is being treated seriously and professionally, noting that Sierra Leone remains committed to combating transnational organised crime and upholding international security standards.
