The Chairman of the Coalition of Civil Society and Human Rights Activists in Sierra Leone, Charles Mambu, has formally congratulated the country’s Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Edmond Sylvester Alpha, on his appointment to lead the helm of affairs of elections in Sierra Leone.
In its position statement on the appointment of the ECSL Chairman, the rights group notes that the appointment of Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha by His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio was in accordance with the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone. It stated that the President, as the Supreme Guardian of our constitution, holds the authority to make decisions regarding the appointment of any individual he chooses.
The civil society group acknowledged that the President, in exercising his constitutional power to appoint Mr. Alpha, Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone, was “properly seated”.
“As we congratulate the country’s Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL), we urge him to endeavour to uphold the principles of accountability, credibility, independence, integrity, impartiality, professionalism, dedication, and transparency,” the rights activists group wishes.
It could be recalled that Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha was appointed as substantive Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) by His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio in February 2026. He successfully sailed through the parliamentary integrity test and subscribed to the oath of office presided over by President Bio on Tuesday, 3 March 2026.
