Hon. Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, who is Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security in Sierra Leone, has disclosed that the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) has secured US$20 million in funding from Japan (JICA) to significantly improve and expand power distribution network along the Freetown Peninsular.
According to Hon. Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella, “This investment, made possible through strong international cooperation, will enable us to construct 50km of 33kV lines, 40km of 66kV lines, and two new substations in York and Tombo – strengthening the grid, reducing outages and preparing for future growth.”
He disclosed that during the meeting, “I stressed that energy is the backbone of our country’s transformation. This forms a key priority under President Julius Maada Bio’s green energy agenda, and we are making steady progress towards delivering reliable, clean, and sustainable power for all.”
Hon. Dr. Yumkella added that he also encouraged further investment in the Northern Corridor transmission project to connect more communities that are currently underserved.
He, however, cautioned that “while we celebrate this progress, we must also address persistent electricity theft and revenue losses,” noting that his colleague, Deputy Minister of Energy 1, Ing. Edmond Nonie, outlined ongoing reforms, including the rollout of smart metering, to aid in improving service delivery.
Dr. Yumkella assured Sierra Leoneans that they are working relentlessly alongside international partners to bring light, opportunity, and a brighter future to every corner of Sierra Leone.
“Together, we can make this transformation a reality – for us, by us,” he concluded.
