The erstwhile Member of Parliament for the All People’s Congress (APC), Hon. Ibrahim Bundu has reportedly said in an interview on WiYard programme on Monday, 20th April 2026 that the APC’s call for the newly appointed Chief Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha to stand down has no constitutional basis.
The erstwhile Majority Leader in Parliament and Head of Government Business made reference to provisions in the 1991 Constitution that address the Hierarcy of the Law and Security of Tenure.
According to the fearless spoken Hon. Ibrahim Bundu, the Chief Electoral Commissioner’s appointment is a fixed term contract, and unlike other appointments, including Cabinet Ministers, the President cannot exercise his constitutional prerogative to sack or terminate the contract of the Chief Electoral Commissioner without going through a proper procedural lengthy process.
Hon. Ibrahim Bundu’s stance implies that in order to initiate such action, a valid reason such as criminal or professional misconduct by the Chief Electoral Commissioner, must be provided as well as proven for him or her to be removed from office by the President.
