GOVT. SUSPENDS AIRPORT TAX
The Ministry of Internal Affairs on Friday 3rd July 2026 announced the temporary suspension of the US$25 Airport Security Fee at the Freetown International Airport in Lungi, Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom in Port Loko District.
Effective today, Monday 6th July 2026, travelling passengers will no longer be required to pay the tax until further notice.
A public notice issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs states, “The administrative measure has been instituted while the current contract framework undergoes a comprehensive review. The specific pause is intended to facilitate the completion of an ongoing independent Special Audit of the Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL) and to evaluate a more seamless, integrated collection system that eliminates public inconvenience for travelling passengers.”
The Ministry did not mince words when it emphasised that the directive does not constitute a termination of the operating contract, noting that during this interim period, “Securiport (SL) Limited will maintain its core technological background operations and continue logging standard inboard and outboard passengers traffic data, excluding diplomatic passport holders.”
The Ministry emphasised that it expected full compliance from all Airport authorities to ensure a smooth transition today, Monday 6th July, 2026.
